Branching Databases
I was teaching people how to do branching databases, usign Granada Branch. This is a piece of software that you use to separate a group of objects into smaller categories and finally identify each object individually. You need to use binary questions (yes/no answers only!). The computer allows you type in the question and then click each object to separate them into the right group. When you have finished your database you can ‘play’ it to see if it works and identifies the correct item.
I showed Mrs Stuart how to make a database for food. It was hard because we couldn’t find questions to separate some foods. There was one between a cake and a muffin and we couldn’t decide how to separate them so we finally cam up with ‘Is it big?’. We were able to print some of the work, I have still got mine! We did one database about clothes but we did not have time to finish it off. I liked doing the day, it was fun playing the databases after they had been made. :0)

I saw lots of Y6 children they understood it really easily. They all seemed to choose the same category, sports or food. They all chose similar sports in the group so their questions to separate the objects were similar too. I felt good about teaching them something.
